- Can you supply dried cow dung, rice and ghee ?
At present we are just providing the Agnihotra Kits as the dried cow dung, rice and ghee are easily available around the world. Look for any organic dairy farm in your area and approach the farmer to get cow dung. We suggest preparing a drying tray from chicken wire and a wooden frame then leaving the dung in the sun for a few days. If you are in a cold and rainy climate then you can dry the dung in an oven or besides a fire. In the sun it takes a few days to dry and in an oven or besides a fire it can be dried within a day.
Ghee is easily prepared at home too and besides using it for Agnihotra, it's an excellent idea to use it to prepare your food in. It has hundreds of medicinal properties and is considered very healthful and auspicious in Ayurvedic Medicine.
To make ghee, simple get some organic (or othewise) unsalted butter from your local dairy or supermarket. Heat it on a low to moderate heat in a thick bottemed pot for some time. After 30-40 minutes of gently boiling, the butter will become golden and separate into the ghee and the residues. You can filter this through a fine sieve or a coffee filter and bottle it for use with Agnihotra.
For the rice offering, we suggest organic brown rice which is easily avaiable. If organic rice is not available where you live then simply use any rice of the finest grade you can find.

- How can I get the sunrise and sunet timings for my location ?
Vedic Society have developed a program for calculating timings that runs on any Windows PC, simply download and install the program from www.vedicsociety.org. - How do I perform Agnihotra ?
How to perform Agnihotra:
It is simple
and easy to perform Agnihotra each day. To perform follow the steps below and in
no time your home and surroundings will be transformed by Agnihotra.
Agnihotra Checklist:
1.
Agnihotra pyramid (pure copper pyramid used for preparing your
fire within).
2. Dried cow dung cakes
3.
Ghee (clarified butter)
4. Two pinches of pure
rice
5. Exact timings for your locale (if
you don't have then contact
us)
6. Pronunciation of sunrise and sunset
mantras
If you do not have any of the items then please
contact us and we
will help you so that you can easily perform Agnihotra each
day.
Procedure:
Wait until
the appropriate time as per your timing sheet and about 10-15 minutes
before this time prepare your fire with a little liquid (make it warm to liquefy
the ghee) ghee and a few pieces of cow dung cakes. Try to time it that your fire
is strong at the exact time of the offering. You can keep your fire going
strongly by feeding it a little liquid ghee every few minutes.
(Note: when the weather is cool, ghee will solidify and thus
you should keep your ghee in a glass bottle and immerse this in a bowl of
boiling water to liquefy your ghee in a few minutes). In India of course, in
most places the ghee is always liquid.
A good way to ensure your fire burns easily is to soak a piece
of dung in warm liquid ghee. This will light very easily and will allow the
other dung to light the same.
An important note on keeping
time:
As Agnihotra is performed at the exact time of the
transition from day to night or night to day (exact astronomical time of
sunrise/sunset), it is essential to have an accurate timekeeper. For those with
Internet and a phone line, the easiest way to do this is to install Dimension
4 on your computer or activate
the Internet Time Service in Windows XP. There is a window period
of a few minutes before and after the exact time to make the offering but it's
better to make the offering as close to the exact time as possible.
Once
the exact time comes simply make the offering of rice and ghee (a pinch of rice
smeared with ghee is offered each time after saying Swaha which means 'I
offer').
For sunrise:
Sooryaya Svaha (now offer a pinch of rice smeared in
ghee)
Sooryaya Idam na mama
Prajapataye Svaha (now offer a pinch of
rice smeared in ghee)
Prajapataye Idam na mama
